Call for tougher punishment for offenders in our Opinion Poll Two; Poll Three Open

Indian Newslink readers have once again overwhelmingly chosen Christopher Luxon as the next Prime Minister and National as the Party of their choice to lead the new government.
There were 272 respondents to the Survey, of which 70.4% said that they would like Mr Luxon to be the new leader of the country, up from 65.8% registered in the August 2023 Poll. ACT Party Leader David Seymour secured 9.7%, down from 10.7%. Support for Chris Hipkins also dropped to 13.2% from 17.6% a month ago. New Zealand First Leader was the fourth choice with 4.7% of the respondents voting in his favour, a marginal rise from 4.3%. He was followed at a distance by Greens Party Co-Leaders Marama Davidson at 1.6% and 0.4% respectively.
National emerged as the single largest Party in this Opinion with 71.1% of the respondents saying that they will vote for the Party in the general election due to be held on October 14, 2023. This represented a significant increase of 10.6% over the last Poll. Support for Labour declined to 9.4% (from 16.8%), while the ACT Party, at 8.2% also witnessed a sharp decline from 14.2%. New Zealand First was at 2.7%, down from 4.2% and the Green Party was at 2.3%, down from 3.2%. The Opportunities Party moved up to 2.3% from 0.5% in the latest survey.
The Survey, held from August 25 to September 7, 2023, was in a voluntary, electronic format, with respondents required to answer five, simple multiple-choice questions. While the participants had sufficient time to respond to the questions and answer them on their own time, the questionnaire could be completed in less than 45 seconds.
Crime and Punishment
There were 272 respondents to our question, “What action will bring down crime in New Zealand?” About 85.7% of them cited ‘Tougher Punishment for all offenders regardless of age’ as the right step, while 23.4% felt that rehabilitation of offenders will bring down the rate of offending. Restorative Justice was the choice of 21.9% of our people and 20.8% of the respondents said that low-level offenders should be let off with a warning when they were caught the first time.
Mortgage Loan Repayment was of primary concern only to 208% of the respondents, while 32.3% considered it as of secondary importance. About 19.8% placed it as the third issue of priority, while it was of the least importance to 27/1% of the respondents.
High Taxes and High Cost of Living were worrying factors for 43.8%, while only 9.4% felt that these were least important. These issues ranked second and third for respectively 28.6% and 18.2% of those surveyed.
Future of Children ranked third for 43.2% while the remaining 56.8% rated it differently. It was of primary importance to 14.6%, followed by those who said it was second (21.4%) and fourth (20.8%) in their list of priorities.
The Future of New Zealand worried 20.8% as the most important issue, while 42.7% felt that it was serious. Other respondents placed it of secondary (17.7%) and subsequent (third at 18.8%) importance.
