The proverbial generation gap and a lack of understanding between the older and younger members of the society can be the harbinger of social and community tension, experts have said.
If being a parent is a challenge in the modern world, so it is being a son or a daughter, because ideological and inter-generational voids are created by the inability of the grown-ups refusing to understand the growing up.
Art of Living New Zealand President Rashmi Bhatia said the Art of Parenting comprises understanding the behavioural pattern of the modern youth, their aspirations and challenges.
“It is common to hear of the differences of opinion that exist between parents and children. Often, elders show impatience and intolerance towards the younger generation, which only serves to compound the problem. There is a need to get to the root of the problem and tackle it effectively,” she said.
Ms Bhatia was addressing the participants at an Art of Parenting Workshop held at the Gurdwara Sri Dasmesh Darbar in Papatoetoe on September 18, 2011.
Emphasising the importance of seeking early solutions, Ms Bhatia cited the example of a young girl in Christchurch, whose mother, unable to cope with stress at home, reportedly committed suicide.
“The youngster suffered further trauma when Christchurch was hit by earthquakes and aftershocks. However, Art of Living Workshops have helped her to remove stress and lead a peaceful life,” she said.
Gurudwara Secretary Raj Bedi said that the cultural shock and cultural differences experienced by Sikh children was a matter of concern.
“Migrants from Punjab often find it hard to raise their children in an environment dominated by Western culture, without compromising their traditional and religious values. Our Gurdwaras play a major role in this process but community groups, parents and elders also have a huge responsibility in this connection,” he said.
Art of Living volunteer and facilitator Rohit Singla said ancient India was a fountain of knowledge and that an increasing number of modern parents were benefiting from our scriptures and teachings.
Ms Bhatia said the Art of Parenting Workshops were designed to help parents to under their children better and equip them with the requisite knowledge to grow into being bright and successful young men and women.
