What should be the Immigration Policy of New Zealand in the future?

Is there a need to rewrite our Immigration rules to reflect the changing demography of New Zealand and make it more responsive to the evolving needs of the economy?

What should be the future policy relating to partners in a relationship, marriage and other legal arrangements?

Should New Zealand have an Open Door Policy, or should there be stringent regulations to check worker exploitation?

Should we consider all international students as prospective future residents and citizens?

Immigration Minister Michael Wood

Optimising Human Capital

Balancing Immigration to optimise Human Capital has always been a challenge to countries like New Zealand that depend on immigration for economic growth and development. Its remote geographic location, market size and other socioeconomic factors are among other factors that exercise influence. Immigration, therefore, is an evolving requirement.

Even so, there is a need for certainty and a plan that will provide certainty to businesses to plan their growth since a majority of them depend on migrant labour for their operations. Additionally, the role played by Immigration and Workplace Relations and Safety will be critical to the achievement of national and corporate objectives of optimising human capital and promoting employer-employee relations, thereby lifting the levels of productivity.

We recognise that New Zealand is evolving its own model of governance of immigration to suit its geographic position, demographic situation and various other factors, which can become a future global guide. We believe that New Zealand will set its Population Policy for growth with immigration and its management as the core principles.

Indian Newslink launched its Lecture Series in 2011 to promote Good Governance through a number of core principles including honesty, integrity, accountability and transparency. The Annual Series is intended to stimulate discussion and promote wider debate.
