Smooth talker extracts money on false pretext

Third of many Parts

The Witch doctor who addressed me as ‘Sister,’ was aghast that I did not see him for some time. And when I met him finally, he asked me to seek ‘protection.’

Although I did not realise then, he would extract information about me and my family while engaging in casual conversation.

I was awe-struck when he said, “I know everything about your family sister. You went with a good intention to them but they have betrayed your trust. I know that you are chosen by God. You are forgetful because you are under a black magic spell.”

I was too stunned to respond.

Black spell

“Good luck is on your way. You must quickly arrange money. I have to perform special prayer to have you released. I have helped many people to not only be free of such spells but also double to triple their money,” he said.

I did not have cash and after my attempt to get a bank loan failed, he asked me to bring all my jewellery and available cash. He explained that these were needed to prepare a metallic statue to ensnare the evil spirits.

His wife, who also called me her sister, said that she had contributed her anklets made of silver for making the statue.

As mentioned in my first article (Indian Newslink, May 1, 2016),  I gave my gold studs, two pearl sets with gold beads, a Majorica Spanish pearl set and $4000 cash.

He convinced me to travel to India to get my jewellery for the prayer.

My husband was against this trip.

Flying plaque

Smooth talker extracts-Silhouette Question MarkHe gave me a metallic object to be kept in my cupboard at home and another, a beautiful picture of Lord Ganesha to be placed in the loft; the third to be attached to my jewellery. He gave me light brown coloured fine powder for use during my meetings with the members of my family, relatives and friends.

I followed his instructions and purchased a metal plaque with some patterns.

Upon my return to New Zealand, I returned the remaining powder and the plaque at his command. As he held the plaque, it flew from his hand!

He grabbed it and said, “Sister, this plaque has been designed to destroy you and your family. I could hold it because I am Godly man.”

He had called me in India and said that my enemies had ‘spoiled my food with evil spirits’ and sending negative energy. “Be careful,” he had warned.

Fire in water

He then asked me to bring 200 grams of cardamom to remove the black magic.

He asked me to sit in his small prayer room and chew the cardamom and take a sip of water and spit it out inside a pot that he had kept ready in front of me. It was filled with some water.

He recited mantras loudly. I could see fire inside the bowl of water. He extinguished the fire. I was frightened.

“Mariam, your sisters-in-law are demons. How could they do such a horrible thing to you?” he said and took me to his office and asked me to sit down and gargle. He took pictures of my open mouth and tongue and showed them to me on his smart phone exclaiming, “They are not humans, but devils. How could they do such a bad thing to my sister?”

My tongue and mouth had turned completely black and were burnt as if I had inhaled some corrosive substance.

Money down the bridge

As I opened my handbag, he grabbed it and checked. He pulled out two ten Rupees notes and said, “They have done black magic even on your money to bankrupt you.”

He then examined other contents of my handbag and said that all of them were also condemned. “Do not use them,” he said and asked his wife to go with me to nearby water flow to throw the Rupee notes. I heaved a sigh of relief.

Later, I showed him the food that my mother had lovingly prepared for me. It was a dessert made with gram flour. He opened it and checked.

After a while he said, “Sister, this food also has black magic. You cannot eat this food. Even the box of biscuits that you have brought is evil-spirited. You have to throw this food away, sister.”

I asked if I could feed it to the birds as I did not like to throw food.

He remarked angrily, “If you feed the birds, God will question you. You cannot harm birds with this rotten food.”

Then he asked me to leave my wedding dresses, an expensive saree and my wedding albums at his office space and collect them when I visited him the next time.

“I have to check whether your clothes were also spooked as they were in India all this time,” he said.

I complied with his demands and left leaving those precious items.

He created a fear inside me and went on to prove that he was protecting me from my enemies.

About Pratima Nand

Auckland based Pratima Nand is a true community and social worker, who helps people in distress and brings them to the attention of Indian Newslink readers. Last year, she launched a campaign against fake astrologers, soothsayers and those who claim to practice black magic and witchcraft (which are illegal in New Zealand), helped in a sting operation of TV3 and attracted the attention of Immigration New Zealand. These offenders from India advertised in all Indian newspapers, radio and television stations and mainstream community newspapers to promote themselves. Ms Nand, a victim of one such astrologer, coordinated single-handedly with the authorities to being the perpetrators to book but all of them fled the county. Ms Nand, who was among the three top finalists (out of more than 330 nominations) at the recently held Metlifecare Senior New Zealander of the Year 2016 Awards recently introduced to us a victim (a person of Indian origin from Mumbai), of one such so-called astrologer and remover of black magic. We have changed her name to protect her identity but the Auckland woman is keen to tell her story, which will be serialised in three consecutive issues. The story appearing here is the third part. The first and second parts appeared in our May 1 and May 15, 2016 issues.
