Skills count from classroom to workstation

A computer student is enjoying the on-the-job experience that he was fortunate to obtain within the study campus.

IBM has employed Chamandeep Singh (a third year Bachelor of Computing Systems student at Unitec) at its Centre in the institution’s Mt Albert Campus to provide IT support to clients over the telephone.

As reported in these columns (March 1, 2013 issue), IBM launched its first Delivery Centre in New Zealand in February this year to prepare students for the digital economy and support businesses to access new skills in mobile and analytics and advanced technology.

The Centre, run in partnership with Unitec, is based on IBM’s model at the Ballarat Delivery Centre at the University of Ballarat in the Australian State of Victoria.

The New Zealand initiative would be a part of IBM’s global network of 50 centres to offer expertise in innovative business process outsourcing and services to local and international clients.

Vital experience

Chamandeep said that his experience at the Centre has enabled him to gain greater understanding of the subjects taught in his course.

“It is really enhancing my learning, and I can see my study is getting used in real time work. Most of my networking subjects and skills are getting used, and learning at work is also helping me in few subjects,” he said.

According to him, an IBM placement would help students to choose their papers appropriately in their ensuing semesters.

He said that his role at IBM was more than just a job opportunity and that the job has boosted his confidence in the IT industry.

“Working with a professional IT support team within a real workplace environment means I have been able to adapt to working under pressure. Working for IBM is a dream start to my career as they are one of the biggest and most trusted brands in the field of computing,” Chamandeep said.
