Sachin keeps Bradman for company

The Indian cricket team may have left Australia empty-handed without making it to the finals of the CB triangular series, but a special presentation from Cricket Australia ensured that cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar travelled back with Sir Donald Bradman for company – his bronze bust.

Editor’s Note: Sachin Tendulkar achieved the much-awaited feat and became the only cricketer in the world to score 100 centuries in first-class matches, playing against Bangladesh in Dhaka on March 16, 2012.

Cricket Australia General Manager Public Affairs Peter Young presented the bronze bust with the citation, “In appreciation for all the pleasure you have brought to Australian and World cricket lovers.”

Mitch Mitchell, a Melbourne sculptor of Zimbabwean descent, crafted the bronze sculpture from the original full size ‘cover drive’ bronze that he made many years ago. The sculpture is on permanent display at the MCG.

Cricket Australia also honoured the ‘Little Master’ by making him the first ever non-Australian to receive a lifetime membership to the SCG, Tendulkar’s favourite cricket ground outside India.

Speaking to SBS Radio Punjabi programme executive president Manpreet Singh, Mr Young said the bust was significant as Bradman had met Tendulkar very early in his career, and thought that he had ‘seen something of himself’ in the young Indian batsman.

“Tendulkar is certainly one of the greats – and Australian cricket fans, despite the fact that he’s been making the runs against us – do appreciate great champions,” Mr Young said.

Tendulkar is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. The first player to score a double century in ODI cricket, he has made more runs and centuries in Test and one-day international cricket than any other.

He is also the first and the only player in Test Cricket history to score fifty centuries. He now has 100 centuries (49 ODI and 51 Test cricket) in international cricket.
