The pride in promoting safer communities and the importance of Policing work came to the fore at a Recruitment Seminar held in Rotorua on October 15, 2024.
Organised by the Hindu Council of New Zealand in conjunction with the New Zealand Police was aimed at evincing the interest of the Indian and other communities to don the blue uniform and become a part of the world’s best Police Service.
Hindu Council President Professor Dr Guna Magesan said that the Seminar afforded a valuable opportunity for people considering a career change or just starting their professional journey.
“More than 25 participants from Rotorua, Tauranga and Hamilton attended the Seminar, which featured presentations from four Police Officers, each offering valuable perspectives on the diverse roles within the Police, the qualifications required and the step-by-step application process. Senior Constable Lania Day (New Cops Support Officer from Bay of Plenty), Constable Shonit Chandra (Ethnic Liaison Officer), Sergeant Shaminderpal Singh and Detective Constable Gurvinder Singh addressed the Seminar,” he said.
A Question and Answer Session, that followed the Seminar enabled even the observers to gain an insight into the Police work.
Positive Impact
“The attendees were enthusiastic, asking thoughtful questions and clearing their doubts with the New Zealand Police officers, which was very satisfying. While a majority of the attendees were from the Indian community, we hope to attract broader participation in the future. We would love to see members from other ethnic communities joining us next time,” he said.
Senior Constable Day said that the Police will extend the invitation to the entire Bay of Plenty region to encourage wider participation.
The Seminar had a positive impact.
Kenil Paliwal, one of the attendees, said that the Seminar helped to understand the core values of respect and service within the New Zealand Police.
Heema, another participant, valued the insight into the recruitment process.
“Understanding the qualifications, training and career development opportunities in the New Zealand Police gave me clarity on how to prepare for the application process. It was a great experience, and I look forward to attending future events,” she said.
