Another Wahine Charitable Trust event to promote better nutrition

Be Iron Informed! Be Iron Inspired!

Wahine Charitable Trust is proud to announce its culturally packed edutainment evening Iron Shakti Plus, a united Call to Action campaign on Sunday, 3 September 2023, to combat iron deficiency and nutritional anaemia.

India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand Neeta Bhushan will be the Chief Guest at the event, scheduled to begin at 4 pm at Sacred Heart College Auditorium located at 250 West Tamaki Road, Glendowie, Auckland.

This imitative builds on the Anaemia Mukt Bharat strategy by the government of India and coincides with the annual World Iron Awareness Week in New Zealand (28 August to 3 September 2023).

Iron is a micronutrient needed in small amounts <100 mg, yet it is essential for mental and physical health and brain development.

It is also essential to fight fatigue and help maintain energy levels to move at home or work or run after your children, building immunity against infections and more.

Even in New Zealand, the land of plenty, one in 14 women suffers from iron deficiency.

Nearly 52% or one in two women aged 15-49 are anaemic, leading to an estimated economic loss of 1.5% of GDP or US$ 40 to US$ 45 billion per year.

At seven months, a baby needs more iron than his or her father.

Correcting malnutrition

We aim to inspire and nurture the well-being of mothers and their babies during the crucial first 1000 days of life (from conception to the second birthday), as well as the well-being of women and adolescent girls from the Indian Subcontinent residing in New Zealand.

We endeavour to intervene in the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition through collaborative alliances, proactive partnerships, and culturally responsive programmes that prioritise nutrition and physical and mental well-being.

As advocates for positive nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, we empower women to become self-ambassadors for and for the whanau (family), and Hapori (community), leaving a lasting legacy of well-being for future generations.

The evening will be the best Father’s Day gift of experience with an M&M (Millets and Micronutrients) magic theme dinner following the event at 7 pm.

Tables seating eight persons at $200 per table are available. Tables purchased on or before August 10, 2023 will go into a draw to win three lucky prizes, each valued at $100.

As Saint Mother Teresa said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
