Programme raises money for flood victims

Auckland based New Zealand Mochi Kshatriya Samaj mobilised about $2000 at a fundraising dinner in aid of schoolchildren affected by recent floods in Fiji.

The money was raised at a dinner and dance night held under the theme, “60s and 70s Bollywood.’

Samaj President Kriti Dass said that the Organisation will donate the amount to ‘Friends Reaching Out,’ a charitable organisation committed to helping flood victims in Fiji.

“Friends Reaching Out’ undertook its first project about three months ago by distributing clothing and food items to the flood devastated areas. It is now working with ‘Fiji Sewashram’ in Lautoka by distributing food parcels to students at selected schools,” she said.

Ms Dahya said that since most members of the Samaj were from Fiji, there was a heart-felt need to help the most vulnerable members of the society in Fiji.

“Children are our future and we have a duty towards them. We are happy that the entertainment programme was enjoyable and useful,” she said.

Jagdish Punja rendered the songs with the support of a local music group.

“Several Auckland businesses of Indian origin provided prizes for a raffle and auction at the event,” she said.
