Priya Sisters to perform in Auckland

Shanmugapriya and Haripriya Vendula, popularly known as ‘Priya Sisters’ will present an evening of Carnatic Music next week in Auckland.

The Concert will be held at Dorothy Winstone Centre of Auckland Girls Grammar School on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 530 pm.

Sangeetha Bharathi Music School and Rasikas NZ are organising the event, which was shifted from its earlier schedule of September 28 due to unforeseen circumstance. Music lovers can expect a repertoire of their talent at the forthcoming one-day engagement.

Govardhan Mallela thanked patrons on behalf of the organisers saying, “We are grateful to many music lovers for their support messages indicating that they would not seek refund for the postponed concert but wait until the event occurs. We are sure that they will be delighted by the performance of the Priya Sisters.”

Talented family

As mentioned in September 15, 2013 issue, Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya Vedula will present a number of songs and Kirtans that have stood the test of time and evolving tastes at the forthcoming Concert, which will also feature Vittal Ramamoorthy (Violin) and Skanda Subramanian (Mridangam) as support artistes.

Born and raised in a Telugu family from Amalapuram in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, the Priya Sisters were initiated into Carnatic music by father V V Subbaram when they were very young. In order to nurture their musical talent, he moved with his family to Chennai.

Later they became disciples of the renowned duo Radha and Jayalakshmi, who were disciples of the legendary G N Balasubramaniam. They learnt many nuances and subtleties of music during their five-year tenure under the master singer.

They follow his advice, “Singing should be so clear that the listener should be able to notate the entire Kriti.”
