Abhishek Sharma of Ekta New Zealand based in Wellington made the community proud when he received a ‘Civic Award’ from Porirua Mayor Anita Baker at a ceremony held on Monday, June 21, 2021.

Outstanding service

The Award recognises the outstanding voluntary contribution that Abhishek has made to the City in the field of social services. We understand that this was the first time that such an Award has been given to a community leader of Indian origin in Porirua.

Abhishek and the Ekta team have been involved in several activities in and around the City. Since July 2020, the team has been distributing about 70 meals, including bread and pastries every Saturday.

And each Friday, since December 2020, Ekta New Zealand supplies about 40 kgs of bread to a nearby community centre. It has also supported Norths Kids Rugby Club in Porirua.

Last year, Abhishek and the team organised the first Diwali event at a local mall, which recorded foot traffic of over 25,000 on any weekend.

In early July, Abhishek and his Ekta volunteers will be giving out over 70 blankets and socks to  the vulnerable people, in addition to the regular meals and breads.
