Auckland City District Police have sought the help of the public in locating Dariush Talagi, who they believe can assist them in the investigation of an incident that occurred on Thursday (August 3, 2023) night on Queen Street in the Central Business District.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton, who is investigating the case, said that there is a warrant for the arrest of the 24-year-old fugitive.

“Dariush Talagi has distinctive facial tattoos and is considered dangerous. While there is no risk to the wider public, it is important that we locate him,” Detective Bolton said.

His message to the man at large is to surrender to the Police.

“Anyone who sees Talagi or has knowledge of his location should call the Police on 111. His Reference (File) Number is 230804/3399. Information can also be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111,” he said.

About the Incident

According to Detective Bolton, the Police were called at about 11.30 pm on Thursday following a fight on the corner of Fort and Queen Streets.

He said that during the fight, which involved a small group of people, one man fired a number of shots, injuring two persons. Both were admitted to the Auckland Hospital in critical condition. One of them had sustained a gunshot wound on the head and the other in the abdomen.

One of the men died in the hospital yesterday (Friday).

“He was taken off life support and sadly succumbed to his injuries with family beside him. This is a tragic outcome for all concerned, and our focus remains on locating the person responsible. The formal process around a post-mortem and formal identification will take place, and the Police will look to release further information about the man once we are in a position to do so. A second man hospitalised with a gunshot injury remains in a stable condition,” Detective Bolton said.

He said that the Police believe the incident to be an isolated one and that the Police have zero tolerance for violence in public places, especially where firearms are used.

“One person was seen fleeing the scene on a Lime Scooter, wearing distinctive red and black pants and a red hat. Police are following positive lines of enquiry and asked anyone with information to come forward,” Detective Bolton said.
