New ethnic broadcaster takes to the air

A community radio station, claiming to be the first of its type in the Bay of Plenty region commenced operations recently from the Tauranga Central Business District.

Owned by the East Auckland based Dhatt Group, which has the Super Value franchise at Flat Bush and other business interests, the new station, called, ‘Bolly Pop,’ broadcasts on 105.4 FM frequency.

National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, community leader Pratipal Singh, Dhatt Group Managing Director Paramjit Singh Dhatt and many other dignitaries were present at the inaugural ceremony of the station on August 27, 2011.

Mr Dhatt said the Group aimed to provide quality religious and entertainment programmes to the growing Indian population in the region.

“It has been our long-cherished desire to own a frequency to serve the Indian community in this part of the North Island. The availability of the frequency augured well with the rising demand,” he said.

As we as broadcasting religious programmes including the daily morning ‘Gurbani Kirtans’, the new station hopes to air ‘Bolly Pop,’ a mixture of popular Bollywood numbers, their Rex-mix version and other items of general interest. This station is round-the-clock and has been broadcasting programmes in Hindi and Punjabi,” he said

“We also have a popular Drive Show,” he said.
