Music show promises melody of yore

If you are one of those who love the music of yesteryears ruled by such icons as Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and the existing singers such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, you would find an ensuing programme highly electrifying and enchanting.

Mohammed Rafi Academy of Music is putting together a bouquet of songs that have stood the test of time, with the recordings of original artistes echoing the corridors of the musical world.

“That bouquet will spread the fragrance of love and friendship. Such is the power of music that it would transcend all barriers,” Academy Director and Producer of the show Amit Sengupta said.

Called, ‘Old is Gold (V),’ the show will be held at the Dorothy Winstone Centre of the Auckland Girls Grammar School on September 22, 2012.

A team of 20 singers and instrumentalists are participating in the event.

Homage to legends

Mr Sengupta said that the fifth edition of ‘Old is Gold’ will pay homage to a number of artistes who have since passed on, including Rajesh Khanna, who died in Mumbai on July 18, 2012.

This homage would include immortal songs such as ‘Ao Na Gale Lagalo Na,’ ‘O Mere Dil Ki Chain’ (Mere Jeevan Saathi), ‘Kya Janu Sajan’ (Baharo Ke Sapne) and ‘Kahin Door Jab’ (Anand), he said.

“We have selected a number of songs that have remained immortal, appealing even to the present generation,” he said.

Choice of songs

These include ‘Mila Hai Kisika Jhumka’ (Parakh), ‘Mai Hoon Jhoomru’ (Jhoomru), ‘Aaj Sajan Mohe’ (Pyassa), ‘Zara Si Ahat’ (Haqeeqat), ‘Kahin Ek Masoom’ (Shankar Hussain), ‘Meri Jaan’ (Anubhab), ‘Naja Kahin Ab ‘(Mere Humdam Mere Dost), ‘Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De’ (Purab Pashchim), ‘Kahin Deep Jale ‘ (Bees Saal Baad), ‘Chhukar Mere Man Ko’ (Yarana), ‘Babu Samjhio Ishare’ (Chalti Ka Naam Gadi) and ‘Jane Kahan Mera’ (Mr & Mrs 55).

Among the singers are Akhila Puthigae, Amit Sengupta, Ashish Joshi, Karamveer Singh, Kanika Diesh, Moneesh Mittal, Reah Maheswari, Rachit Bhatia, Ritika Shah, Siddharth Krishnamoorthy and Vidya Teke.

The orchestra would feature Amit Sengupta (Harmonium), Anthony Yempee (Lead Guitar), Diya Anthony (Rhythm Guitar), Govind Prabhu (Khol & Mridangam), Hemant Thaker (Key Board), Joscel Alexander (Acoustic Drums), Joseph Alexander (Electronic Drums), Peter Paul Ravela (Tabla & Dholak) and Shivam Padeyachi (Base Guitar).
