Sri Lankans mark Diwali with piety and gaiety and the forthcoming Festival would not be an exception. As well as prayer meetings in Temples and Churches, the community will get together to celebrate the event with music and dance.
Conforming to the latter would be Innisai Maalai (Evening of Melody) on October 31 at the Parish Hall, located at the corner of Church Street and Galway (next to Dress Mart) in Onehunga.
Swarnagal, one of the most versatile music groups will present the evening’s concert and if the past experience is any indication, the forthcoming event would be a sellout.
Established in 1992 as a band that reaches across various ethnic groups, Swarangal today can boast of singers and instrumentalists of versatility.
The group is a holy mix of Tamilians of Indian, Sri Lankan, Malaysian, Singaporean and Fijian extraction, with a common purpose: promoting quality music through quality programmes to quality audiences. For almost 18 years, its members have been involved in entertaining music lovers with a variety of old and contemporary songs culled from Indian films.
Says Thayaparan Arun, Swarnagal Leader and Event Organiser, “Apart from promoting local artistes, the Group is now developing talent in Hamilton and other cities. The forthcoming programme will feature youngster in the six to 14 age group.
The cost of tickets varies from $30 per person to $75 for a family of two adults and two children. There are other categories as well.
Mr Arun said there were 300 tickets for sale and was confident of selling all of them.
“There will be no door sales,” he said.
