Hamilton based Community Access Radio has launched a project to provide information relating to the earthquake recovery operations in Christchurch.
The information, in several languages, is currently being broadcast throughout the country through its network.
The broadcast can also be heard on Fresh FM (Nelson), Access Manawatu (Palmerston North), Arrow FM (Masterton) and Taranaki Access Radio (New Plymouth).
“These stations have taken five key messages provided by the Office of Ethnic Affairs, translated and recorded them into Spanish, Fijian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tamil, Japanese, Tagalog, Russian, and German and other languages,” Community Radio Hamilton General Manager Phil Grey said.
He said Access Radio was at the heart of many migrant communities and that that the new project had allowed ‘a play of strength.’
“Our Christchurch colleagues Plains FM have sadly been unable to play what we know would have been a huge part in the recovery so far, but if we can help get these messages to those in need, in their own first language, we would have succeeded,” Mr Grey said.
