Measurable targets for public undertakings

Delivering better public services to New Zealanders during tough financial times is one of the National-led Government’s key priorities for this term.

The Indian community has a longstanding presence in New Zealand and we are the fastest growing Asian population here.

That is why our ‘Better Public Services’ targets, announced last week, are an important part of our plan to build a brighter future for you and your family.

Prime Minister John Key has set 10 challenging results for the public sector to achieve. Underneath each result, we have set some specific and measurable targets to be achieved over the next five years.

We want to make a positive difference to Indian peoples’ lives in New Zealand by building bridges between communities and agencies.

We want to see our Government agencies working more closely together, with a strong focus on doing things that make a difference.

We want to see our social agencies working together, better, on supporting long-term beneficiaries into work and protecting vulnerable children.

The Government is focused on lifting participation rates in and the quality of early childhood education services, and the delivery of more and better bilingual education.

Our children are our future, and we want to support them with the best possible opportunities that we can.

We will continue our good progress in reducing crime, reducing long-term welfare dependency, and reducing educational underachievement.

But we want to do more.

No apologies

Over the next five years, we aim to reduce the number of people on working-age benefit for more than 12 months by 30% (accounting for more than 20,000 people); reduce the incidence of rheumatic fever by two-thirds; and reduce the violent crime rate by 20%.

We want to extend that approach across other sectors, so that agencies would have more tools to achieve these results.

That is why we are making changes to the State Sector Act, the Public Finance Act, and the Crown Entities Act.

The National-led Government makes no apology for having high expectations in wanting New Zealanders to get the best out of their public services.

These changes are about setting specific and measurable targets to get results from the services that matter most to you and your family.

Together, these changes are a big shift towards better results that matter to New Zealanders.

We are delivering on our promises.
