Market ripe for Indian sports goods and toys

India’s capabilities as a manufacturer of a wide range of sports items and toys will be showcased at an exhibition and buyer-seller meeting in Auckland next month.

New Delhi based Sports Goods Exports Promotion Council (SGEPC), sponsored by the Commerce and Industry Ministry of the Indian Government will lead a delegation of 17 exporters to this country on November 15 and 16, 2010.

As well as participating in a buyer-seller meet, they would also have on display a range of goods at the Stamford Plaza Hotel.

The delegation would be in Australia from November 9 to 14, 2010.

SGEPC Chairman Anil Mukim said Australia and New Zealand were significant markets for Indian sports goods manufacturers and exporters.

“The Indian Government is giving a special thrust to promote India’s exports to this region. These are our focus markets,” he said, writing in the Council’s recent Newsletter.

Council Secretary Tarun Dewan said India had immense potential to promote its sports items, equipment and toys and that their quality were on a par with the best in the world.

“We are keen to establish our presence in the New Zealand market and offer our strengths and strategies for the benefit of dealers and consumers in your country. The market for the goods with which we are involved is ripe for expansion in overseas markets,” he said.

Established in 1958 as a Government sponsored organisation, SGEPC functions as a common platform for companies involved in sports goods and toys all over India to exchange views and evolve common strategies for promotion. It organises promotional campaigns, business delegations and buyer-seller meetings in India and overseas. It also facilitates participation of exporters of sports goods and toys in international exhibitions and trade fairs.

According to NPD Group, a US based market research company, although recession has adversely affected the global economy, manufacturers and distributors of sports goods and toys could expect market revival next year.

It placed global sale of sports equipment, apparel and footwear in 2009 at $US 282 billion, down from about $US 288 billion in 2008.

A Council official told Indian Newslink that the total value of sports goods and toys exported from India to New Zealand was $US 2.64 million during the 2009-2010 financial year.

“Inflatable Balls, valued at $US 1.19 million claimed the largest share, followed by Cricket Bats ($US 390,000) and Protection Equipment for Cricket ($US 25,000).”

The state of the global economy and its subsequent impact on consumers worldwide has affected the sports market as well. The market declined by 4% in the US and about 5% in Japan, the two major markets, which experienced the aftershocks.

India has emerged as an important manufacturer and distributor of sports goods and toys to almost all major markets in the world.

A Committee of Administration manages the Council. Apart from Mr Mukim, it comprises K C Anand (Vice-Chairman) and Raghunath Singh Rana, Regional Director.
