The Lautoka community is in a state of shock after a 59-year-old man and his wife were found dead at their home last weekend.
It is alleged that the man, named Sundreshan Goundar, murdered his wife Lata, who succumbed to multiple wounds, and then took his own life.
A neighbour said that he was in a state of disbelief when he heard the news.
“I was confused to hear this because the couple never had any quarrels or disputes. I had just met the late Mr Goundar on the Saturday morning (the day of the incident) before going to work. I greeted him and things looked normal, just like any other day,” he said.
“They were a really happy couple and their residence was in a central location, therefore attracting frequent visitors as well. This is the first time that such a tragedy has occurred in our community,” he said.
Depressing news
Mr Goundar was a chef at a restaurant in Savusavu, prior to settling in Lautoka.
Another person said that she was dumbstruck because she had seen the two together earlier.
“The couple has been living happily. Both of them liked me and always took time to talk to me. I did not see any signs of disputes or disagreements. They are survived by three children, two daughters and a son. All of them are married,” she said.
Police investigation
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a Lautoka couple died in what is suspected to be an alleged murder and suicide on Saturday, August 25, 2018.
Ms Naisoro said that couple’s daughter-in-law found the bodies at their Saweni home and that Lata was found in a pool of blood. She found Mr Goundar’s dead body outside the house.
Police are investigating.
