Kumar Sanu, the legendary playback singer of the Indian film industry with hundreds of hits to his credit, arrived in Auckland this morning (April 23) from India.

This is the second visit of the singer to the City after a highly successful concert held about eleven years ago.

“I look forward to performing in Auckland and I am inspired by the love and respect that I have been receiving from New Zealanders. I hope that my Concert will cater to people of all generations,” he said at the Auckland International Airport.

He was received by Trivision Entertainment Director Dharmend Shyam who is organising the Concert along with many fans of the celebrated singer.

Mr Shyam told Indian Newslink that the Concert will attract about 4000 people from across the country since Kumar Sanu is performing only in Auckland.

He said that a few seats are still available in various classes.

They can be booked here or at Kumar Sanu Concert in Auckland.

The Lord of Melodies

Mr Shyam said that as the ‘Lord of Melodies,’ Kumar Sanu promises a night steeped in musical brilliance.

“The Trusts Arena will echo with his timeless voice, resurrecting the golden era of the 1990s. Embrace an evening where every note revives the charm of yesteryears, and every lyric rekindles a thousand memories. Please do not miss this rare opportunity to relive the songs that have captured the essence of a generation and to be part of a historic night of cherished melodies and unforgettable emotions. Join us to celebrate the return of a legendary voice that’s been a cornerstone of Bollywood’s musical legacy,” he said.

Mr Shyam said that Kumar Sanu is one of the most prolific singers in the Indian film industry.

“This is a testament not only to his polished technique but also to his unparalleled ability to quickly and effortlessly master unfamiliar material in the studio,” he said.

Kumar Sanu became an even more endearing artiste as a Judge at the Indian Idol Season 14 (2023-2024) along with Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani.

In his career spanning 40 years, Kumar Sanu has rendered more than 22,000 songs in Hindi and 21 other languages (including Spanish). He created a sensation in 1993 by recording 28 songs in a single day (thereby entering the Guinness Book of Records).

He has performed for almost all popular composers of the Hindi film industry including A R Rahman, Anand-Milind, Anu Malik, Dilip Sen-Samir Sen, Ismail Darbar, Jatin-Lalit, Kalyanji Anandji, Nadeem-Shravan and Rahul Dev Burman.

Echoing Kishore Kumar

The Indian government honoured him with a high civilian award of Padma Sri, while the readers and judges of the Filmfare Awards recognised him over five consecutive years.

Among his major hits are Tuje Dekha To Ye Jana Sanam (‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’), Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, Rum Jhum Rum Jhum (‘1942 a Love story), Ye Kali Kali Aankhen (‘Baazigar’), Kaho Na Pyar Hai (‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai) and Tu Meri Zindagi Hai (‘Aashiqi’).

When Kishore Kumar, the veteran singer of the Hindi film industry passed away following a heart attack in October 1987, producers, directors, composers and actors were worried that the void would never be filled. But they were soon relieved when Kumar Sonu, a relatively unknown singer at the time began making waves with a voice endowed like Kishore.

He was destined to take on the mantle of responsibility to ensure not only the success of films but also the continuity of a legacy that had become a part of the film industry.

Far from being the ‘echo of Kishore,’ he carried the last name of the late singer as his first and established a reputation for singing any song to any situation.

Among the singers who have worked with him are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal, Sapna Mukherjee, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Sadhana Sargam, Sudesh Bhonsle, Shaan, Shreya Ghosal, Hema Sardesai and Sunidhi Chauhan. He rendered the title song for the TV show Yeh Duniyan Gazab Ki with Udit Narayan.
