Justice remains national priority

This year’s Budget was National’s third and a very important part of our on-going plan to rebalance the economy towards savings and productive investment.

We are building a stronger economy and a brighter future for you and your family.

Despite tough economic circumstances, we have protected the most vulnerable New Zealanders by boosting frontline services.

I was pleased that Justice remains a priority for the National-led Government again this year. We have committed an additional $157 million over two years to help build safer communities.

This means more money to improve the legal aid system, strengthen Community Law Centres, and boost the Serious Fraud Office.

The fact that Justice is the only sector besides Health and Education to receive new money in Budget 2011 shows how important building safer communities for you and your family is to this Government.

National is delivering on its promise to take action on violent crime.

We have passed 18 new laws to help make families safer at home and in the community. We are clamping down on gangs and P, and investing in programmes to turn young people away from crime.

We are committed to improving the justice system and getting value for money.

That is why we are making changes aimed at simplifying and speeding up our justice system. We are working to make prisons more effective.

When we came into Government in November 2008, New Zealand was facing a prison capacity crisis. Now, our efforts are paying off.

The container cellblock at Rimutaka Prison, made of recycled shipping containers, was constructed faster and 30% cheaper than comparable, traditionally built units.

One year on, the number of incidents involving drugs, alcohol, cell phones or weapons has been significantly lower than in comparable units.

This reflects the secure design of the Unit, good management and vigilance of Corrections staff.

It is great that Justice is a priority for this National-led Government.

I know how important it is for you and your family to feel safe in our homes and communities.

That is why taking action on violent crime and building safer communities is a priority for this National-led Government.
