Caring for the environment is an Islamic virtue, and with this in mind, local Muslims have adopted a stretch of riverside near Auckland Zoo. Members of the Rasheed Memorial Dawah Trust (RMDT) and their friends are involved in the Meola Creek Restoration Project overseen by the Wai Care voluntary organisation and involving other volunteer groups with the support of Nikki Kaye, MP for Auckland Central. They are clearing weeds and replacing them with natives. Already 1200 grasses and trees have been planted, transforming the stream bank. A delightful gushing spring, lost for 20 years, was rediscovered once the weeds were cleared. Ultimately, Auckland Council will carry out landscaping and put in riverside paths, creating an amenity where one did not exist.
