Shri K N Ganapathy, father of Uma Venkatram and father-in-law of Indian Newslink Editor Venkat Raman, passed away in the early hours of December 23, 2021 in a Chennai Hospital after a brief illness. He was perhaps the oldest resident of Thiruvanmiyur, a suburb of the metropolitan city.
He was 98 years old and left behind his three surviving daughters, their husbands, five surviving grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His eldest and youngest daughters – Suganthini Ganapathy and Kalyani Venkat Narayanan – live in Chennai while his second daughter Uma Venkatram lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband and daughter.
Mr Ganapathy was employed in Spencer & Co in Bombay (now Mumbai) and Dunlop India Madras (now Chennai), for more than 40 years. Following retirement, he was employed at a local school. He was a keen photographer and a Carnatic Music enthusiast. He was an intense Cricket fan and used to follow all types of matches – from local District play-offs to Test Matches, T20 and One-Day International. He was an ardent admirer of former Black Caps Captain and record-making Cricket All-Rounder Daniel Vettori.
A man of simplicity, erudition and piety, Mr Ganapathy always participated in all religious and Temple activities in Thirvanmiyur, Besant Nagar and wider Chennai. He travelled extensively to all the Holy places in India and Nepal. He has also visited Bahrain, the United States of America, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia.
Mr Ganapathy was a Yoga practitioner and maintained robust health throughout his life. He was known for his humility, kindness and friendly disposition.
