The Goan community in Auckland will observe the Feast of Assumption on August 15, with sobriety, seriousness and piety.
GOANZ, an organisation representing people of Goa, is organising the event at the Carmelite Chapel located at 636 Mt Albert Road in Hillsborough.
GOANZ President Corvin Carvalho said anyone could offer the mass to a deceased member of the family with prior arrangement.
“Members of the community are welcome to make donations towards the mass. We also need assistance in the reading,” he said.
According to the belief of Christians of the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of the Anglican Communion and Continuing Anglicanism, the Assumption of Mary was the ascent of Virgin Mary to Heaven.
This doctrine was defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. This belief is known as the ‘Dormition of the Theotokos’ by the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches.
The Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on August 15.
In many countries it is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation.

GOANZ will present ‘Ugddas,’ a Konkani drama on August 20 at 7 pm at the Freemans Bay Community Hall, 52 Hepburn Street, Freemans Bay.
