Fruit or vegetable, the Banana provides sumptuous meals

The ubiquitous Banana, one of the few fruits that are grown throughout the year, is the main feature of the Home Chefs series on SevenzTV this week.

Asya Mohamed Abeid, Founder and Owner of Zanzibar Limited, an Avondale (West Auckland) based company that brings together various brands in community partnership, has donned the role of the Chef to cook Green Banana Curry with Coconut Cream.

“It is a combination of a vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal enjoyed by people of all cultures and ethnicities, indicating that food, like forms of art, transcends all human barriers,” she said.

Asya Mohamed Abeid took our host Bharati Sonu through the process of cooking the delectable Green Banana Coconut Curry.

She prepared the vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions, made out of green bananas and coconut cream.

It was interesting to watch Bharati learn from Asya how to peel green bananas, which is a time-consuming task. The delicacy was prepared with very few ingredients, following a simple cooking method.

Asya does not miss home as far as food is concerned because she has the skills to cook delicious food that reportedly tastes the same as the food from her mother’s kitchen.

About Bananas

Bananas were the economic backbone of many African Kingdoms that thrived before European colonisation. Bananas were very significant in early African history because they encouraged fresh migratory surges. They spread rapidly throughout Africa and over time, many varieties of bananas were grown over a large spread of land.

Cooking bananas has been in practice in many parts of Africa for several centuries. This resulted in many interesting recipes that satisfy a cross-section of populations around the world.
