Flash mob splashes colours in Auckland

Flashmob culture is gaining popularity in Auckland, this time to spread fun and music to mark Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colours.

More than 75 men and women converged at the Telstra Clear Pacific Centre in Manukau on March 11.

The choreographed song, set to Dhanush’s ‘Sachin Anthem’ which pays tribute to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, proved to be a surprise highlight of the event, delighting onlookers with its spontaneity and energy.

The flashmob was another initiative of Aucklander Padma Akula, who created a sensation in December with the Tamil song, ‘Why this Kolaveri Di?’ which rocked the world with more than two million You Tube hits. The flashmob was on CNN, Indian National news channel TV9, as well as Times of India, amongst others. It also went on to inspire a number of copycat flashmobs around the world from Sydney to Singapore and Germany to name a few.
