Avondale College First XI Cricket Coach and former Provincial and International Representative Player Nazeem Smith said Akash has unique qualities and attributes that would see him as a star in the near future.

“Akash follows the style of Indian batsman Rahul Dravid,” he said.

As Number Three batsman, his ability to concentrate on the game is a major strength, added to which is a positive mental attitude, tempered by patience.

With a sound technique that he employs while adding single runs to his scores, he has also demonstrated his penchant as a team player.

Nazeem says Akash always takes training sessions seriously.

“He is one of our regular outstanding fielders. He has taken many catches in the slips, while he is also a good cover fielder. As Avondale College’s No.1 leg spin bowler, Akash has also taken many match winning wickets on numerous occasions,” he said.

The young student was recently awarded the First XI Cricket Cap after playing the mandatory 10 games.

He is also the Vice Captain of the First XI team and has received representative colours when he played for the Western Districts team.

Akash is also an outstanding student and has received many accolades.

He was elected to represent the students on the Governing Body of Avondale College this year.

Akash believes that with hard work and endurance his dream of playing in the International Cricket team will come true one day.

Says Nazeem: “I think he has all the potential and makings of an international cricketer if he keeps working hard at it. He is a dream player of any coach and always has more to offer than offers.”

Many say Akash is a born leader, a trait that has been demonstrated on many occasions, including his role as Senior Prefect and as the Vice Captain of his college team.

“He inspires, motivates and brings out the best in others. He has built an extremely good rapport and popularity amongst his peers. Everyone was happy when he was voted as the Student Representative of the Avondale College Board of Trusts for 2010,” they said.

Akash believes that student years are an important phase in the journey of life.

“It is vital to enjoy the sight, sound and experience of this journey. As a representative of the student, I have gained valuable and enjoyable experience.

“However now it’s time to for me to move forward to the next destination and it is a start for someone else to continue the legacy which Avondale College has to offer,” he said, speaking at a recent function in the College.

Nazeem said soon after taking over as the First XI Coach at the College last year, he found “something special” in Akash.

“He is disciplined, dedicated and determined. I think he has the potential to be an excellent player in international cricket,” he said.

As a seasoned player and coach, Nazeem is confident that youngsters like Akash who have the ability and physical fitness can become top players.

“Akash has what it takes to be a great player,” he said.
