A Charity Golf Tournament held at the Maungakiekie Golf Club in Mt Roskill on March 20 witnessed over 80 enthusiastic golfers turn up to support and raise funds for Friends of Fiji Health Foundation.
This Auckland based Charity has been set up to provide clinical medical services in rural areas in Fiji and to perform surgical procedures at Lautoka Hospital.
The second mission to Fiji is programmed for the end of June. Its first mission was completed in November last year.
The daylong event was sponsored by a number of businesses houses and individuals and raised $21,000 after meeting all expenses.
Dr Sunil Pillay, Chairman of the Foundation was pleased with the wide support for this event, which ensured future missions to provide health services and surgical procedures to the poor in Fiji.
Daven Naidu, one of the Trustees of the Foundation, coordinated the event and was assisted by a number of other trustees and friends. He was pleased with the overall result and the fact that some superb Golf was played.
“The Tournament was played in two groups, the first group comprising golfers with current membership to an affiliated club and with an official handicap. This Group had two divisions – A Division comprising Golfers playing with 0 to 12 Handicap and B Division comprising Golfers playing with 13 to 36 Handicap. Both were based on the Best Stableford System,” he said.
Group 2 was for previous Golf members and Non-Club members without an official handicap. The maximum assessed Handicap for this Division was 18 points for men and 24 points for women.
While most of the golfers were former Fiji residents, a number of others also played to support the goals of the Foundation.
Mr Naidu said, “The standard of golf was very high and some good scores were achieved. It was also pleasing to receive the support of former New Zealand Cricketer Deepak Patel, who turned in a good card for the day.”
All players at the Charity Golf Day automatically went into a draw to win a return Air Pacific ticket to Fiji.
