‘Dilruba’ reverberates Auckland corridors

The power of Indian music and the inner peace that it creates in the minds and souls of people was yet again evident at a programme held in Auckland on February 23.

Organised by the Rhythm School of Indian Music at the Panmure Community Hall, it featured the prowess of Ustad Sandeep Singh on ‘Dilruba,’ an Indian string instrument and by other vocalists and instrumentalists.

He executed two compositions in Raag Des, accompanied on the Tabla by Professor Manjit Singh, Director of the School and Harsharin Kaur on Tanpura.

The vocal concert of Hindustani Classical by Dr Alankar Singh ((Assistant Professor of Music at the Punjab University in Patiala) which followed, was also a delightful experience, with the artiste rendering three songs in Raag Shudh Kalyan.

The elaboration of the Raag was systematic and his sonorous voice won the hearts of music lovers. His accompanying artistes were Sandeep Singh (Dilruba), Professor Manjit (Tabla) and Mandeep Singh (Tanpura).

Tabla jugalbandi

The Tabla Jugalbandi by Professor Manjit and his six disciples, who presented ‘Teen Taal,’ was also a treat.

Their Punjab gharana style of Tabla Vaadan, with the Nagma accompaniment by Professor Daljeet Kaur (harmonium) and Ustad Sandeep (Dilruba) was superb.

The musical evening concluded with classical vocal renditions and a composition of Gurbani hymn by Dr Alankar Singh in Raag Bhairavi.

Rhythm School of Indian Music conducts classes in Indian Classical Music (vocal and instrumental) and organises concerts and workshops.
