When Nandini (Nancy) Nair goes under the spotlight at the Mrs World 2021 finals scheduled to be in Columbo (Sri Lanka) later in the year, the young contestant will not only debut her native Fiji at the glamour event but also fulfil her own dream.

In fact, it would be start of another journey in the life of the 34-year-old mother of a teenager, and hopefully take her across the Continents, just her job as a Flight Attendant at Air New Zealand did for many years.

Proud Motherland

As a citizen of Fiji (and New Zealand), Nandini is proud to represent her motherland at the Mrs World Contest this year, an opportunity which she missed two years ago, due to a bereavement in the family.

“It was with a very heavy heart that I had to decline the offer in 2019. Therefore, I was excited when I received the invitation again this year to represent my country as Mrs Fiji World 2021. Even as a child I dreamt of participating in an international beauty contest on behalf of Fiji.  Undoubtedly, it is a singular honour for someone like me who loves Pageantry,” she said.

Born and raised in Yalalevu and Vatulaulau in Ba, Nandini has been on the beauty circuit since her formative years. She participated in a beauty contest held at the A D Patel College (Ba) during her school years.

“That was my first moment on stage and I evinced much interest in everything to with pageantry. I gained confidence as a public speaker, meeting people and making friends. It helped me immensely in life,” Nandini said.

A penchant for pageants

A few years after her migration to New Zealand with her family, she had an opportunity to participate in the Miss Indianz 2006 competition (organised by Dharmesh Parikh) at which she won the title of ‘Miss Personality.’

While there were many opportunities to remain under the spotlight thereafter, Nandini had to step back since her matrimonial and professional responsibilities seized her time and attention. Ten years on, she believes that the invitation to participate in the Mrs World Contest is propitious.

“I believe that Mrs World 2021 will bring with it a new chapter in my life and career and I deem it a great honour to be present at the global event in Sri Lanka (in July or August 2021) representing as Mrs Fiji World 2021. Everything about the forthcoming event – the promotions, the learning process, the travel with all the attendant rules and regulations currently in force in New Zealand, Fiji and Sri Lanka (and the countries enroute) – will be worth the effort. I have learnt that it is never too late to try anything in life,” Nandini said.

About the Mrs World Pageant

As a global feature and a brand, Mrs World was established 25 years ago, following the success of its forerunner, Mrs America.

The Mrs World website said that the competition celebrates the uniqueness of the marriage woman, her family and the community.

“Mrs World features directors in 80 countries, elevating the combined systems to the largest and most successful of its genre in the world. Over the years, Mrs World has produced many fascinating locations including Queensland (Australia), Jerusalem (Israel), San Jose (Cost Rica), Honolulu (Hawaii), Las Vegas, (Nevada, USA), Amby Valley (Near Mumbai in India), St Petersburg and Kaliningrad (Russia), Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province (Vietnam), Guangzhou (China), Solomons (Maryland, USA).”

Empowering women

Nandini said that Mrs World Competition allows women to look at life afresh.

“I do not know what the future holds but in participating in the forthcoming Competition, I wish to help empower women who think and feel that it is too late to achieve a goal. I say to all our young girls in Fiji, ‘spread your wings and aim to fly as high as you can and do not let anyone tell you how you are supposed to do it.’ It is how you look at life and what you make of it. Every opportunity is to grow and succeed,” she said.
