Dance competitions challenge the youth

Young members of the community displayed their talent amidst fun and laughter at the ‘Desi Dancing Queen’ and ‘Da Crew Challenge’ show held in Auckland recently.

Organised by Ace Talent Promotions, the Group that puts together ‘Desi Intermediate Dance Off,’ the event, held at Dorothy Winstone Centre (Auckland Girls Grammar School) on July 6, witnessed a dance fiesta in a multitude of dance formats.

Desi Dancing Queen

Azhar Adam and his prodigy Avneil Mohan commenced the programme with a dance number under the theme, ‘After Earth,’ followed by ‘Desi Dancing Queen,’ a dream project of Famida Adam and Tanya Mehra, who were keen on a ‘show for women by women.’ There were 10 contestants, chosen from 15 applicants who expressed their interest as the search for ‘Dancing Queen 2013’ began in January.

Karuna Thawani was the winner of the title, while Famiza Hanif and Shayana Lal were declared First and Second Runners-Up respectively. Kajal Gaundar was also chosen as another Second Runner-Up.

According to the organisers, Karuna captivated the audience with her dancing skill, which ranged from hip-hop and belly-dancing to contemporary forms.

Costumes, songs, expressions and emotions were the highlight of the performance of Famiza, while Shayana was full of energy. Emancipation of women was the theme of Kajal’s performance.

Da Challenge

The second part of the night was ‘Da Crew Challenge,’ which was the concept of two Azhar and Shannil Varma, who showed their professionalism in hip-hop and Bollywood dancing.

The winners were ‘Mere Bhaiz’ (MBz), a group of boys whose main dance style was Bollywood. Apsaras Dance Group was the First Runner-Up, followed by ‘2NE1,’ as the Second-Runner Up.

Guest performances by New Zealand’s power couple Rahul Chopra and Mahima Shukla and ‘Prodigies of Rawness’ were the highlight of the evening.

Team Ace Talent Promotions are organising the ‘Desi Intermediate Dance Off, an Intermediate Schools Dance Competition on September 28 at Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau. Tickets are priced at $12, of which $2 will go towards Ronald McDonald Charity house.
