Be prepared to get into a trance

Good actors and great performers are known to cast a spell on their audience and keep them in a trance for a length of time, proving which is a local artiste from the Goan community.

Agnelo Mascarenhas is not just a man of the theatre; he is also a magician by his own right, although the former takes much of his after hours.

He is due to present his sixth play called, ‘Toiar Rau’ (‘Be Prepared’) on November 5 at 630 pm at the Freeman Bay Community Hall.

Apart from him, the cast includes Diego Fernandes, Edward Barboza, Isidor Fernandes, Iva Baretto, Jane Verhoven, Michael Diaz, Nita Rodrigues and Paul Dsouza.

Affectionately called, ‘Shanu,’ he has been responsible for the revival of the Konkani theatre in New Zealand since he migrated from Muscat (Oman) where he lived and worked for 17 years. His passion for native Goa and Konkani language encouraged him to present both in their best form on stage.

He made a resounding beginning in 2004 with ‘Hem Godlem.’ Five other plays followed, including ‘Tuka Lagon,’ ‘Dusrem Ghor,’ ‘Addim Attam Fudem’ and ‘Assro,’ each of which brought new artistes to limelight, providing entertainment to the community.

As part of his acting career, Agnelo has worked with several Goan writers and directors including Alfred Rose, Betty Naz, Jancit Vaz, M Boyer, Menin De Bandar, Mic Max, Rita Rose, Wilfy Rebimbus and William deCoutorim.
