Bankim Pathak concert due in Auckland

One of the most prolific and ‘authentic singers’ of Hindi film legend Mohammed Rafi is due to perform in Auckland.

Bankim Pathak, admired the world over for this mellifluous rendition of songs in ‘Rafi’s own voice’ will present a concert at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre on Eden Terrace (145 New North Road) on June 24, 2011.

UA International Director Umesh Sharma is organising the show in response to repeated requests from admirers.

“Bankim stirs the soul of Rafi and enthrals audiences at every performance. His concert last year was a success, with fans of Rafi, irrespective of their country of origin, asking for his return,” he said.

The visitor will present several popular number of Rafi in his programme titled, Ek Yaad Rafi Ke Baad.

“I look forward to returning to your beautiful country and presenting another concert of Rafi’s songs. I hope that I can meet the demands of music lovers in New Zealand. It would be another exciting experience,” Bankim said, speaking to Indian Newslink from London.

A protégé of Professor Sudhir Khandekar, Bankim had formal training from Navinbhai Shah and Krishnakant Parikh, popular artistes of the time. His career began with a concert with Anila Gohil, leading to the launch of Ek Yaad Rafi Ke Baad, specialising in immortal songs of Rafi.

Since then he has performed in most parts of the world, bringing alive the voice of one of the most heard in the world.

Like Elvis Presley in the US, Mohammed Rafi has had many clones, but these revere the late singer so much that they almost worship him. Schools have sprung up in his name but the best tribute is paid by those who are modest, spreading goodwill and understanding like their late master.

“Mohammed Rafi is my idol and Bankim is my role model. I have the honour of organising and directing his show and I am confident that the members of the extended Indian community will support the programme by being a part of the audience and listen to great music,” Mr Sharma said.

Further information about the performing artistes and details of the show will be published in our next issue.
