The first Asia-Pacific Ministerial Summit on Environment, jointly organised by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UN Environment will be held in Bangkok from September 5 to September 8, 2017.
Held under the theme ‘Towards a resource-efficient and pollution free Asia-Pacific,’ the Summit provides an opportunity to assess the state of environmental sustainability in the region, identify regional perspectives and priorities, and agree on concerted actions to promote sound environmental management and sustainable use of natural resources.
Unique event
For the first time, the Summit will bring together two UN ministerial-level meetings on the environment, namely the Seventh Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific, and the Second Session of UN Environment’s Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific.
Ministers and officials from 30 countries including Armenia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, Fiji, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Vanuatu, Viet Nam and Cook Islands will attend the Summit.
The Summit will be opened Dr Shamshad Akhtar, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, and Erik Solheim, Executive Director of UN Environment on September 7, 2017.

Tuesday, September 5, 2017
10 am: Opening of the Pavilion of Partnerships and interactive exhibitions on ‘Plastics in oceans’ and ‘Acid rain’
Thursday, September 7, 2017
9 am to 12 pm: Opening Ceremony; Ministerial dialogue ‘Towards a resource-efficient and pollution free Asia-Pacific region;’ Launch of Gender, The Environment and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific Report.’
5 pm to 6 pm: Asia Environmental Enforcement Awards, recognising the efforts of enforcement officers and organisations to curb pollution crimes
