A woman’s ‘reflective experience with God,’ combined with a number of innovations are manifest in a new musical album released at the Elim Christian Centre in the East Auckland suburb of Howick on July 7, 2012.
Sujatha Selwyn’s ‘Nenjame 2’ comprises ten songs that eulogise Lord Jesus, invoke the divine spirit, stimulate the heart and the mind and evince the interest of the younger generation.
This Reporter has not had the benefit of listening to the tracks but announcements at the launch ceremony indicated that ‘Nenjame 2’ followed its predecessor (‘Nenjame’) in its creative approach.
Mrs Selwyn, a business analyst at a multinational firm, has packed her emotions in writing, composing and rendering the songs, narrating her personal experiences in life, which have not often been pleasant.
Born into an orthodox Brahmin (Hindu) family in Chennai, she and other members of her family became Christians, drawn by the Mercy and Sacrifice of Lord Jesus towards humanity.
Her work in serving Lord Jesus continued after she migrated to New Zealand with her husband Selwyn Thomas and their son and daughter ten years ago.
“Tamil is my first love and I read the scriptures and compose songs only in Tamil. This is my fourth album of songs but second on a commercial basis,” she said.
According to her, the new album contains ‘‘Kadavul Vazthu’ in Tamil ‘Uyir Ezuthu Varisai (a Tamil grammatical pattern with vowels as the prime factors), a wedding song and songs in Carnatic, Hindustani and folk styles.
