Hundreds of people in New Zealand conforming to the principles and teachings of the Art of Living Foundation will spend an hour on October 1 in meditation.
In Auckland the session will be held from 530 pm to 630 pm at the Bayfield School Hall (2 Clifton Road) in Herne Bay.
Radio Tarana Programme Presenter and Foundation Member Hemant Parekh said meditation was indubitably the most significant process for purification of the mind, leading to healthier life with positive thought and action.
He said the concept of ‘World Mediates’ being held on October 1, was initiated by Sri Ravi Shankar, Founder of Art of Living.
He quoted the leader as saying, “Meditation is accepting this moment, and living every moment totally with depth. Meditation helps us let go all the tensions and stress, providing the mind with a much needed deep rest,” he said.
According to Mr Parekh, mediation had the power to calm the mind, enabling it to evaluate issues in their proper light.
“Sri Ravi Shankar has taught us the power of meditation. It allows the mind to settle deeply into itself. As the mind settles down, it centres itself more and more in the present moment and experiences a natural state of joy. The change for world peace first starts with oneself because peace is contagious,” he said.
According to experts, meditation refers to any of a family of practices in which people can train their minds or self-induce a mode of consciousness to realise benefit. Meditation is generally an inwardly oriented, personal practice, which individuals can do by themselves.
“Prayer beads or other ritual objects may be used during meditation. It may involve invoking or cultivating a feeling or internal state, such as compassion, or attending to a specific focal point,” they said.
Mr Parekh said people in more than 150 countries would be participate in the ‘World Meditates’ on October 1.
