Maharashtrians say Diwali celebrations are somewhat different in their State but its spirit will come alive at the Freeman’s Bay Community Centre in Ponsonby, Auckland on November 6.
The Auckland Marathi Association is organising the programme, comprising a mixture of traditional and modern items, due to commence at 8 am.
The Festival will begin with Rangoli and Kandeel (Lantern) Competitions, followed by ‘Diwali Faral’ (usually gift boxes comprising sweets) contemporary and folk dances and theatrical items.
Public Relations Officer Neha Chitre said the event has become an important part of the Association’s calendar.
“The variety entertainment segment will comprise ‘Ek Ekankika’, an One-Act Play by ‘Barodians, a folk dance by Manisha Kolhe and her group and ‘Mrs Maniben Patel’ an English Play by Prashant Belwalkar,” she said.
