The recent earthquake in Christchurch revealed the extent to which people depend on the Government to provide for the common good.
Earthquakes break the most basic perception of our world and our people.
When terra firma or solid earth is no longer ‘solid’ beneath our feet, we suddenly become aware of the fact that technology and all the wealth stashed in banks cannot be of any use.
Awareness campaigns by the Civil Defense Department are designed to educate us, while the mandated Government Earthquake Insurance provides an instant rebuilding fund.
It is beyond our power to prevent such natural disasters, but we could at least look at some of them from the inner plane.
According to the Hindu mythology, multi-headed serpent (called ‘Naga’) is charged with the task of balancing the earth. Earthquakes are believed to occur when he shifts his head, tilting the globe’s balance.
Mexica (the indigenous people of the Mexican Valley) believed that the present world would end because of earthquakes and that the Sun would be destroyed.
According to a Fijian legend, Degei described as half-snake, half-rock, is the creator, and head of all Gods. Earthquakes are considered punishment for the wrongdoing of human beings. These tremors are seen as humanity’s reluctance, or inability to live in harmony with Nature.
Hinduism describes such developments as a concept of Dharma.
Earthquakes are also associated with great positive spiritual transformations.
For example, the place where Buddha sat, determined to achieve enlightenment, was said to have shaken to its very foundation.
The moment Mahakal, the Rudra Avatar of Shiva was born in Ujjain in India, there were six types of earthquake experienced in all realms. Meditating on the link between human emotions, karma, prayer and Mother Nature can be very revealing.
People of Christchurch who went through the harrowing experience last week would have realised that God is omnipotent and All-Powerful. Some may say, “There is no Omnipotence or Omnipotence is the only power.”
The general belief is, “There is an all-powerful consciousness that rests on a high plane, governing the entire Universe.”
Some non-believers may ask, “Why can’t that Omnipotence stop a big earthquake from happening?” The simple answer is again karma.
Spiritualists and people who believe in God would say that everything occurs as per the will of God and that we humans are powerless before such divine ordainment.
Divine creation consists of spiritual ideas that are harmonious and good. The mortal mind could be fatalistic or even indifferent.
Many in the scientific field are discovering the impermanence of matter, and the role of thought. When we become conscious of the Spiritual Universe, disasters or diseases lose their credibility.
We should be thankful that the Christchurch disaster spared lives. It was a miracle.
Physical forces apparently caused the quake.
These forces and their results can be dealt with by addressing the unconscious thoughts of mortal mind. When we pray to be conscious of the present and real spiritual universe, disasters or diseases lose their credibility in thought and can begin to subside and eventually disappear from consciousness and experience.
This process is just like darkness disappearing in the presence of light. It is natural.
The Guru (God or any other name) extends control over your home, earth, water, everything in fact.
So what can an individual do when facing an earthquake?
It would indeed be a frightening experience.
But it is important, through prayer, to continue to be conscious of the omnipresence of the Divine.
Natural disasters are expressions of the Divine purpose, as the forces of Nature are always in alignment with God’s will, unlike humans.
That is why meteorologists cannot accurately predict the hurricane’s path or strength and geologists cannot predict the date or exact epicenter of earthquakes.
According to some theories, earthquakes are Pure Energy coming straight to each being.
“If we are awakened souls serving the Divine, this Energy will lift you into The Higher Vibration Frequencies and Experiences of Magic, Wonder, Synchronistic Events, and Miracles. This Energy will shake, rattle, and break down the illusionary walls of the wrong belief systems and ignorance in people who are in spiritual slumber.
“Mother Earth has no more time to wait. The spiritual plan has been fully activated. We can move forward only as one society of people,” the theories say.
