A mother of two young children is among the latest beneficiaries of the Green Prescription Programme (GPP) which helps people adapt a more active lifestyle.
Aucklander Padma Sundaram said that the Programme helped her lose 15 kgs since joining GPP, which is funded by the Health Ministry.
“My weight has dropped from 74 kg to 69 kg. I have been taking Zumba classes twice weekly and brisk walking on other days. I feel that I have an increased level of energy which helps me to focus better,” she told Indian Newslink.
Written Advice
Delivered by Sports Auckland, GPP is a written advice given to a patient by their doctor or a practice nurse to encourage and support them to be active. It is a support service that helps patients to follow regular physical activity and eat the right types of food. The organisation now has the services of Reisha, a Registered Dietician.
Subsidised activities
While all participants are issued with a card, some centres offer subsidised rates for physical activities and wellness programmes.
The support provided to patients may range from three to six months, through telephone calls, face-to-face meetings or by a group support in a community setting. The patient’s progress is then reported to the referring health professional.
Useful monitor
Mrs Sundaram said that Brooke Mitchell, her Physical Activity Advisor extended continuous support and encouragement.
“This helped me to set my goals and stay motivated. During each visit, my progress is recorded and I am advised accordingly on the next level of activities that I needed to embark. Anyone who wants to start on this journey, please keep going, motivate yourself and the change will come,” she said.
It is understood that Auckland City and Counties Manukau provide free interpretation and translation service while attending appointments.
