These are among the issues that will be discussed at the World Muslim Conference scheduled to be held in Auckland on Saturday, November 23, 2013.
Organised by the Office of Ethnic Affairs under its ‘Building Bridges Programme,’ at the Aotea Square from 10 am (Registration commences at 915 am) to 3 pm.
Ethnic Affairs Minister Judith Collins will inaugurate the Forum with her keynote speech, and launch the ‘2013 Building Bridges Booklet.’

Sydney based lawyer Irfan Yusuf, Senior Fonterra Trade Consultant Kevin Geard, Meat Industry Association Chief Executive Tim Ritchie, Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development Limited Chief Executive Brett O’Riley, Foreign Affairs & Trade Ministry Media Liaison Officer Jonathan Curr and Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand President Dr Anwar Ghani will be among the main speakers.
The post-lunch session will be devoted to discussions on ‘Halaal Talking in Aotearoa: The Triumphs and Tribulations of the New Zealand Muslim,’ with a commentary by TV 3 Journalist Ali Ikram.
The Forum is open to all New Zealanders who evince interest in contemporary issues in the context of New Zealand’s relationship with the Muslim world and the New Zealand Muslim community.
“The events of September 11, 2001 have changed the way we view the world and created a climate of suspicion and stereotypes of Muslims globally. While New Zealand has avoided the serious negative events that have occurred in Europe or America, we have been presented with our own challenges,” a notification said.
