Young students set to steal hearts

Students of Sargam School of Indian Music will dominate the stage with their prowess in vocal and instrumental music in Auckland over the next weekend.

Singers, violinists, Sitarists and Tabla players will be among our children who will decorate the stage presenting an evening of melody at Blockhouse Bay Community Centre located at 524 Blockhouse Bay Road on Saturday, July 26 at 630 pm.

School Principal and Director Basant Madhur said that the concert would be in Jugalbandi format.

“Among the highlights of the concert would be a Vocal Jugalbandi between Roshan Raju and Amrita Kaur, Sitar and Violin Jugalbandi featuring Shalina Sandran and Surbhi Sharma and Tabla trio Prashant Kumar, Shamal Lal and Akhil Madhur. The programme will also feature Amrita and Jayana, two upcoming students who are under the tutelage of Deepak Madhur,” he said.

Roshan and Amrita were trained by Professor Shukdev Madhur (Founder of Sargam School of Music) and have their own music album, while Shalina with a mix of Indian and Kiwi European parentage evinces professional interest in Sitar and Surbhi, a student at University of Auckland has a number of public performances to her credit.

Prashant, Shamal and Akhil have been performing with many visiting performers, apart from appearing as support artistes in a number of Bollywood shows and Devotional and Classical Music concerts in New Zealand.

Entwined twins

Such concerts usually feature two solo musicians (vocal or instrumental) to bring out the best in both. Jugalbandi, which means ‘entwined twins,’ used to be confined to Hindustani Classical Music but with the advent of professional artistes both Hindustani and Carnatic schools, fusion has become common in concerts.

Mr Madhur said that the young students have had vigorous training over the past several months.

“These students inspire us, their peers, parents and other budding artistes. They are enthusiastic, eager to learn and more importantly, seek perfection in their art. They make all of us proud,” he said.
