A young student is seeking funds for a film that she is directing as a part of her postgraduate degree project.
Rina Patel, a Film, Television and Media Studies student at the University of Auckland, is keen to complete her film titled Y2K.
She hopes that the wider Indian community would extend a helping hand.
Hiona Henare, her Producer, said that it was rare to find inspiring Indian and Kiwi women in the creative industry.
“Rina is one of the very few Asian students to pursue a Master’s degree in film at the University of Auckland. She was the first woman from the Gujarati community to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from the National Drama School (Te Kura o Aotearoa o Toi Whakaari). Since then, Rina has worked successfully both on stage and on screen as an actor,” she said.
Rina has written the script for Y2K, which is stated to be a brave, new short film based on her personal experiences of growing up in Auckland in the 1990s.
The film is set in the heart of global Y2K hysteria and follows the story of Nita as she prepares to confront her parents with shocking news about her sexuality.
But Nita finds herself competing with the timely event of the new millennium, a moment in time when a small proportion of New Zealanders, including Nita’s mother, thought that the world was about to end.
“Currently we are raising funds for the film (directed by Rina) through ‘Pledgeme,’ the community online funding service. We need as much help as we can to raise money to make our film,” Ms Henare said.
