It is not just enough to have a pretty face; it must be expressive and tell a wordless story. It is another form of art, says Shaayal Gounden, our Model of the Fortnight.
She knows better, for her face has been under focus for the past few months since she earned the top honours in beauty pageants.
As well as being crowned Miss South Auckland, the 20-year-old is also Miss Beauty (of Miss World New Zealand) and Miss Planet New Zealand 2014.
While photography is her hobby, she is keen to become a model and an actress.
“I love to take photographs and being featured in them too,” she said.
Born and raised in South Auckland, Shaayal is pursuing her graduate course in Applied Management (with Event Management as the major subject) at the Manukau Institute of Technology.
Her proclivities are appropriately in show business.
Shaayal said that she enjoys the company of her mother while shopping, and her fun-loving and socialising nature sees her in the company of friends and most importantly that of Alexis, her Goddaughter.
Speaking at the ceremony where she was crowned Miss South Auckland, she said that every person arriving in New Zealand must be greeted with warmth.
“I will strive to extend that sense of welcome to all those who join us in New Zealand, a place where people from all over the world come to reside. We are a beautiful little country filled with not only hopes, dreams, ambitions and promise but also challenges. We are a nation with strength to overcome and unite in times of difficulty,” she said.
Shaayal said that while New Zealand is multicultural, she is proud of her Indo-Fijian roots.
