Walk-through City Rail Link tunnels

A unique opportunity on November 17, 2019

Keeping Aucklanders safe and comfortable underground is the focus of planning for next month’s public walk-through of a section of the City Rail Link tunnels.

Up to 10,000 people will have the opportunity to walk a 600-metre-long round trip of the twin tunnels on Sunday, November 17, 2019.

City Rail Link Limited Chief Executive Dr Sean Sweeney said that ensuring everyone is safe and has an enjoyable time when they visit is a priority.

“While the walk will not take long (about half an hour), people should be aware that there are some ‘skinny’ bits underground where the walking routes narrow and areas where lighting is limited that may not suit people uncomfortable in enclosed spaces,” he said.

Tunnel tickets will be restricted to 1000 people an hour.

Free tickets, registration

Dr Sweeney said that there may be some queuing before people can start their walk.

“People may have to wait a short time while we manage numbers already in the tunnels. If  there is queuing, we are asking people to be patient.  No one is going to miss out.”

Tickets for Walk The Tunnels will be available on-line on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.

Tickets are free and will be issued on a first-come first-served basis.

There will be a maximum of six tickets issued to each person.

Walk The Tunnels will run between from 8 am until last entry at 5 pm.

There will be 10 entry sessions during the day.

When tickets become available, people must nominate the time of their visit.

Tunnel entry and exit will be through the Britomart Station in Lower Queen Street.

People will be able to walk under Lower Queen Street, the Commercial Bay Development and into the lower end of Albert Street – a return distance of 600 metres.

Tickets holders will be given a map showing where they are underground, and an overview of the City Rail Link project and the transformational impact it will have on Auckland when it opens in 2024.
