Violin Master leads instrumental evening

One of the celebrated violin artistes of the Indian community will lead a group of instrumentalists at a concert this weekend.

Madhan Mohan Kalyan will be the star attraction at Sangamam 2011, scheduled to begin at 630 pm at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall on June 18.

Among the artistes accompanying him are Antony Yempee (Lead Guitar), Divya Nanthakumar (Keyboard), Diya Yempee (Rhythm Guitar), Geerthana Nanthakumar (Synthesizer), Joscel Alexander (Acoustic Drums), Joseph Alexander (Electric Drums), Peter Ravela (Tabla & Dholak), Shivam Padayachi (Base Guitar), Suresh Ramachandran (Mridangam) and Vishnu Kumar (Percussions).

Three years ago, Madan put together ‘Sangamam 2008,’ which introduced a number of artistes to the community.

He attributes his talent to the mastery of his father M Kalyan, popularly known as the ‘Singing Violin’ in the Tamil film industry. A great performer, Kalyan has been a part of several orchestras assembled by music directors over the past few decades.

Beginning his music career at the tender age of six under his father’s watchful eyes and ears, Madan obtained qualifications (Grade 6) in Violin with honours from the Trinity College of Music London.

He has also completed courses and programmes in Carnatic Music and Indian Classical Music conducted by violinists and vocalists in Tamil Nadu.

He has performed with the ‘Dhindukal Angu Ingu Music Orchestra,’ ‘Rainbow Music Orchestra’ (Coimbatore), ‘Seven Star Music Orchestra’ (Madurai), ‘Jeeva Raagangal Music Orchestra (Karaikudi), ‘Raaja Geetham Music Orchestra’ and ‘Laxshman Shruthi Music Orchestra’ (Chennai).

His appearances in New Zealand include scores of programmes organised by local associations and groups including ‘Navrag’, ‘S B Magic Music Group’, ‘Blessed Reformers’ and ‘Swarangal.’

Madan now has his own band called, “Maestro MMK Music Orchestra.’
