Vehicle sales on the right track

Vehicle sales jumped more than 20% in 2014 with double-digit growth in almost every sector, according to Motor Trade Association (MTA).

New commercial vehicle and used imported passenger vehicle sales were especially strong.

Last year, 265,216 new and used imported vehicles were registered in New Zealand, up from 218,329 vehicles sold for the first time the year before.

MTA Chief Executive Warwick said that ‘growth has been huge and sustained for a period of years now.’

Key figures

Following are statistical details of new and used vehicles sold in 2014.

New commercial vehicles: 36,716 units sold in 2014, up 19% on 2013 (the fifth year of growth). Top sellers: Ford Ranger, followed by the Toyota Hilux (after 32 years in the top spot) and the Holden Colorado.

Used (imported) commercial vehicles: 7943 vehicles sold, up 30% (the best year since 2008).

New passenger vehicles: 90,632 sales, up 10% (the segment’s best year since 1984). Toyota Corolla, Holden Commodore and the Suzuki Swift were the Best Sellers.

Used imported passenger segment: 129,925 units sold in 2014, up 31% (nine-year-high). Top sellers were Nissan Tiida, Suzuki Swift and Mazda Axela.

New and used imported road-registered motorcycles: 9672 units, up 11%.
