Tough competition for Miss Wellington title

With the Miss India Wellington beauty pageant scheduled to be held in the Capital on September 10, we have pleasure in profiling the second and final instalment of the remaining contestants in this issue (the first part appeared in our August 15, 2011 issue).

Abigail Sen

“My long term goal is to gain qualifications and the requisite expertise to become a nurse,” says this 17-year-old contestant, who hails from Suva, Fiji.

But Abigail Sen is also into dancing, fashion and modelling, the kind of passion that is expected of a beauty pageant aspirant.

“My passion also extends to family and friends,” she said.

Abigail is currently enrolled at McGirr Training in Wellington, to complete a course in literacy, numeracy and computing.

She said the training programmes are designed to help people enter employment, develop practical employment skills and continue further training, if required.

Darshana Maisuria

Bollywood is the ultimate destination for many participants in beauty contests and this youngster from Gujarat is no exception.

“Miss Indianz is all about celebrating Indian beauty, fashion, dance and music and I look forward to be a part of each of these,” Darshana Maisuria said.

A final year student at Wellington’s Tawa College, she has been on stage at a number of community events over the past few years.

Dharshana’s interests also extend to the field of Cricket and Soccer.

Harman Saini

Biochemistry is a serious profession and this 24-year-old young woman from Punjab is keen to make the best of it in the coming years.

Armed with an honours degree in the subject from the Punjab University in Chandigarh, Harman Saini arrived in New Zealand to pursue a postgraduate diploma in Biological Sciences at the Waikato University in Hamilton.

Employment as a biochemist at a leading producer and supplier of benchmark diagnostic reagents in Wellington took her to the capital two years ago.

“I am proud to be an Indian, a Punjabi and a biochemist. I hope to win this Pageant, which will be a crowning glory to my penchant for music and dance as well. I am confident of representing the Kiwi Indian community,” she said.

Ramiza Sahib

“I was born in Fiji, the ‘Soft Coral Capital of the world’ and moved to New Zealand before two years before I became a teenager,” says Ramiza Sahib, adding that she has embraced two cultures.

Challenges excite this youngster, which explains her reason to be a part of the Miss Indianz Wellington contest this year.

A student pursuing psychology, Ramiza enjoys swimming, sketching and making new friends.

“As I walk down this road of change, I hope to become stronger, wiser and more confident,” she said, referring to the forthcoming event.

Vanisha Kumar

It is obvious that this Sixth Form student at Tawa College loves to write, for her biodata was one of the longest that we have received in all the years that we have been promoting the Miss Indianz contest!

Vanisha Vandhana Kumar has varied interests, ranging from Netball (which she plays and coaches at school), designing (that she does for her school magazine), Bollywood dancing (which she performs at several functions) and jewellery (which, occupies her work time at The Warehouse).

Her colleagues and friends describe her as a vivacious and loving person.

“Vanisha is always cheerful, chooses to work as a part of a team rather than alone and is confident in leadership roles. She is popular among her colleagues, enthusiastic and is open to challenges. She is a family-oriented and sophisticated young woman,” a colleague said.

Competition will be fierce with 11 contestants vying for the title.

The Contest

The winner and two Runners-Up in the regional contest will participate in the Grand finale leading to the crowning of Miss Indianz 2012 in Auckland next year.

“The competition, due to be held on or about February 18, 2012, will mark the tenth anniversary of our pageant. The winner of Miss Indianz 2012 will represent New Zealand at the Miss India Worldwide 2012 in Suriname,” Dharmesh Parikh, Director of Reshabh D Parikh Productions, which is organising the event, said.

He said anyone from any part of the world, can vote online for the ‘Public Choice Photogenic Award’ (www.rhythmhouse.co.nz).

“Miss Indianz 2010 Jacinta Lal will crown the winner of the Miss India Wellington 2011 title.
