Therapy aims to lift winter blues

An on-going therapy programme aims to help people come out of depression, which is stated to be common during the winter season.

The Massey University Centre for Psychology commenced the group therapy programme at its Albany Campus on June 18 helping people to ‘help themselves feel better and get re-engaged with things that protect low mood and anxiety.’

Sessions are held on Tuesdays from 530 pm to 730 pm at the Centre for Psychology, Level 3, North Shore Library Building, 229 State Highway 17, Albany Village.

Participants must be aged 18 more, and will meet a facilitator one-on-one for an initial consultation to discuss whether the group will meet their needs, or whether individual work would be more suitable.

Each group would have a maximum of eight participants.

Clinical psychologist Dr Margaret Roberts is facilitating the programme with intern psychologist Hannah Bos.

“In winter, moods can lower as with the shorter days and people often stop doing things that make them feel good. They find themselves in stressful life situations that cannot be changed but could cause increased anxiety,” Dr Roberts said.

There is no need for a GP referral, and the cost per session is $40, in addition to an initial assessment fee of $70.

Those registered with a ProCare GP may be eligible for vouchers to cover therapy costs. WINZ subsidies are also available.

Other services

The Centre also offers clinical expertise for a wide range of needs, including children with emotional, learning or behavioural difficulties; individuals or couples with relationship problems; older adults suffering anxiety, grief or depression; people with work-related difficulties; and new migrants struggling with adjusting to a new culture and customs.
