University of Auckland student Shruthi Vijayakumar would explore the Amazon Jungle for three weeks next month.
She was among the nine youngsters selected for the expedition on February 9, 2012 at the annual international ‘Mike Horn Young Explorers Programme’ Selection Camp in Switzerland.
King’s College Auckland student George Legget was also among the 18 hopefuls from various parts of the world who attended the annual Explorers Programme, established to provide adventure opportunities to the young.
The Programme, 11th in the series of ‘Pan Global Adventure for Environmental Action’ (PANGAEA), selects youngsters from around the world to undertake the expedition.
Applications for this year’s expedition closed on December 5, 2011 and an elite class of 18 students from 13 countries was chosen out of hundreds of aspirants from all over the world.
The selection process included a ten-day selection camp at the Mike Horn Expedition Center in the Swiss Alps.
The young explorers will make it to the Amazon Jungle on an eco-expedition from March 4 to 25, 2012.
A press note said South African Mike Horn is acknowledged as the premiere eco-explorer of the modern era.
“After his own personal exploration feats, he vowed his life work to share the Earth’s largely unseen beauty with young people everywhere in an effort to empower them with a sense of appreciation, the will to conserve and the unique perspective needed to inspire sustainable action plans for the future.” Mike calls his project PANGAEA a namesake inspired by the Greek locution meaning ‘all-earth’ as in the ancient supercontinent in which the world’s present-day landmasses were joined together before drifting apart and settling into the world as we know it today.
