The Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand proved yet again its competence and calibre to score high and establish high standards of service with the opening of its Sports Complex at Sir Kalgidhar Sahib Gurdwara in Takanini.
It has already become a landmark and it would be no surprise if the Complex, with multiple facilities is included in the tourist map of New Zealand.
Details of the sports facilities appear as our Lead Story on Page One of our April 1, 2021 Digital Edition.
Sri Kalgidhar Gurdwara was a point of focus and community solace during the Covid-19 lockdown with its officials and volunteers working round-the-clock, distributing thousands of food packets to anyone in need.
The Complex became an official distribution centre for Auckland Council.
Partnership with Police
As Deputy Commission of Police Wallace Haumaha said at the inaugural ceremony, the new Sports Complex is another jewel in the long and distinguished service of the Sikh Community.
Stating that the inauguration on March 21 augured well with Race Relations Day, he said, “It is a day when we pause, reflect and honour the memory of the protestors killed in South Africa in 1960, and also those Shuhada (martyrs) who were killed on our shores only two years ago. The theme for Race Relations Day this year Walking Together. The idea is that no matter what communities we may belong to in Aotearoa, we are all navigating the journey of a more inclusive society grounded on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the journey is made easier when we support one another,” he said.
Salute to Martyrs
Mr Haumaha said that Sikhs fought for the freedom of all New Zealanders during World Wars One and Two, paying the ultimate sacrifice in defending democracy and our freedom.
“During significant events such as the Covid pandemic but also during the aftermath of the Christchurch terrorist attacks and the Christchurch earthquakes, you have donated food, funds and welfare services to sustain and console our communities. During the recent water crisis you have allowed police and our emergency services to use water from your boreholes to clean our vehicles. We acknowledge your service,” he said.
